I am intending to go to the Pyrenees in July and need to start getting together the necessary kit for the trip.

I am asking if anyone has an existing list I can look at and tweak to my requirements.

Also in the same vein, can people please comment on what has gone wrong with they vehicles whilst in the middle of nowhere, and what spares need to be taken.

I may well venture further afield next year, so any purchases will come in for trips in the future.

Do you want to fix it when on your trip or prep it before you go?

Hi 24 Seven

I see you have done some traveling yourself. Thanks for the reply.

The vehicle will of course need to be fully maintained before setting off. I think the radiator is a good precaution. I am a little worried about these lower ball joints now - what do you think?

Are there any parts that are not fixable in the field that I would be recommended to take?

Any advise greatly appreciated

Blimey - where to begin ! Smile Im sure this thread will grow quite large so....

Ill ignore the obvious items and mention the small but essential items we discovered on our Morrocco trip.

Navigation:
'tomtom' style gps
'normal' gps
road maps
small change ready for toll roads.

Misc:
Wind up LED torch - cant believe how much use this got !
baby wipes
bin bags

Safety:
fire extinguisher
first aid kit
High vis jacket per person in car
Safety triangles x 2
drinking water - how much dependant on terrain
mobile phone

Misc:
Hidden safe
Leatherman type tool
lots of mp3s

Spares: - none were used included
Bulbs - a legal requirement for Europe
2 x spare wheels with tyres (BFG AT)
1 x 20m tow rope
k weld for emergency repairs
jubilee clips,cable ties etc

AA cover must be worth a look at for piece of mind too.

Our SWB 90 was flawless with no mechanical nightmares or worries, despite snow in the Atlas mountains and rockfields in deserts.
Im sure you will have no problems in a LC.

Thanks Blue Meanie, I hope to tackle Morrocco perhaps next year.

It is always good to talk to someone who has actually done it. I am sure your list will be added to, however thanks for starting it Smile

By the way, what year and mileage is your 90?

See, that's the FULL list. You'd never take all that in reality but use the check boxes to note what you want Laughing

Sorry I read your first post as the kit to fix it last night (beer)  Embarassed

Anyway, my views on preping are here http://www.tlocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=7439 save me just copying here.

Also I would check that the rad is clean even if newish if you have been playing in the mud, I have not been to Pyrenees but know people who did last summer and they said it was very hot with long steep climbs which tested their cooling sytems.

The LWB is 2680 kg GVW the lighter the better, consider removing any un-needed seats.

I use Garmin GPS's there are loads of Free maps available and you can share routes with others, plan routes, look at them in Google Earth and can keep a route log of your whole trip. Garmin Mapsource and nRoute are around for free, add to a cheap 2nd hand Laptop and you have a very nice nav system for not much money.

I have just got a TomTom style Garmin GPS for a backup and also for when a Laptop is in the way, hopefully it will except the free Garmin Map for Morocco, I know it excepts routes already, not all Garmins except routes so care is needed before buying.  (almost a subject on it's own really so I will move on  Laughing )

Lower ball joints :- I'm going to give mine a good looking at but it seems it's a very rare problem because 3rd Gen Surfs will be the same setup and I guess 120's and I have not seen it mentioned more than a few times.

Parts to take IMO, an amount of all fluilds, if you spring a leak at least hopefully you can top up and make it to help. If you don't change the UJ's then a spare UJ, belts and if dusty some spare air filters.

I made some thermal window blinds for all the windows which were very good, well worth the effort

Pack light, but have a very good bed  Very Happy

Hope I have not wondered off topic too much and if there is anything else, please ask  Smile
