what is "normal" oil consumption for this engine? mine seems to have used just over 1 liter in the last 3500 - 4000 miles - no blue smoke no leaks _________________ 98 colorado ,cooper sst tyres + mud +scrapes

Well this will through you. When I am in Spain visiting my Parents my truck uses more oil than when in the UK, it is roughly the same as both of you

is it because of the warmer climate so the oil thins out a little more? _________________ LC4, BF Goodrich all terrains, apart from that bog standard. |

Generally ,the toyota diesels dont use any between oil changes unless they have high klms. Its 30c-42c daily here and neither of mine are using any oil.
Oil usage can depend on the viscosity and I use 20-50 all year round _________________ 1995 HZJ75 troop carrier

Mine will get to half way between max and min between oil changes... So changing the oil to the schedule means no topping up really...
I think a lot of motorway work will use a bit in line with any turbo'd motor... |

No need to worry.
Like all motor manufacturers, Toyota will advise the worst case scenario.
My own, non electronic, 1-KZT engine doesn't use oil between changes (3,000miles).

My KJZ70 started using about 1 litre every 1000 miles a while ago. I started using a slightly higher viscosity oil and used some Forte Seal conditioner and it hasnt lost any since and my oil pressure is much better too. |

Seal conditioner is designed to promote swelling of the seal lip to increase pressure and reduce or stop the leak. If your leak is the sump to block seal, then nipping up the fixing set pins may help, but you need to be certain as to where the leak is. I suggest a thorough clean of any area showing an oil stain. Then run the engine and sit under and watch. Possible leak areas are, rear main oil seal---this will probably show as a drip from the bell housing, the oil level switch assembly or the oil return pipe from the turbo. Also check the breather pipe from cam cover to manifold. Any blow by build up in the sump will create oil leaks just for the hell of it.

Another area to check is between the turbocharger and the engine. If the turbo oil seals are going, the oil can leak into the inlet manifold.
Don't panic if the inside of the manifold or hose are greasy but look for liquid oil. If there is any liquid oil, suspect the turbo charger.
Its worth getting it overhauled or replaced with an exchange unit before the bearing fails and ruins your day.

If the bearings fail, then so to will the oil seals. Oil can then pass into the engine via the inlet manifold. This oil will then be burnt as fuel and the revs will begin to rise. You will switch off the engine but it will continue to run on it's own sump oil. Eventually the engine will self destruct. If you are very lucky you may be able to stall it before the revs rise to far.
Hows that for a bad day.
