I did a little trip up to Shark Bay(western australia) last week,took lots of pics.This is a link to the pics I took of my excursion out to Steep Point.

Nice one Rosco
How was the wind? Looks pretty calm in the pics. It seems to have been relentless this year up that way. Im glad I didnt go to Ningaloo this July, as everyone I know was blown out.
Steep Point track still looks the same, and hopefully never changes
Im heading to Coral Bay in a couple of weeks, then out to Mt Augustus. Im heading in from Minilya Roadhouse through the station country. Will post some pics when I get back.

Hi Daz. I was expecting it to be windier but it was ok.It got a little breezy at night(and cold) but most of the time it was very gentle. I even had the aircon on a few times in the afternoon.
I havent been to Coral Bay since 1987,it was very open then and you could camp anywhere you want.
I do remember it being very windy in August.

Rosco,
My first trip to Coral Bay was 1979, with my parents when I was about 10, and it was def camp where you want. Primitive, but nice.
Last trip was 2006, and its def changed in many ways, but still the same, if you know what I mean. Nice to take my young kids there.
The diving is unbelievable.
My first Shark Bay trip was 1978 with the folks, dirt road from Overlander roudhouse, and a sign asking anyone going there to take mail and take as many parcels as they could take. The parcels included deliveries for the Nursing Post, Doctor and other small businesses.
Last trip to Shark Bay I had to pay to see a dolphin.........

Head on smashes occur on many of the single lane tracks through sand dunes so having a sand flag alerts the oncoming driver of your presence.
We also have some with a red light on top for night driving.
Minimum height above ground is 3m/10ft

I remember those days,my dad used to drive semi trailers up north and we often went past the Overlander and I remember the dirt road to Shark Bay.
National Geographic did a documentary about the area in the 50-60s and it was primitive then. I think they made it while there was a rabbit plague in progress and the vegetation was even more sparse than it is now.
Ive seen the dolphins so many times on tv I cant be bothered paying the $8(although the visitors centre is not bad). There is much more interesting sights up there IMO

Good idea,its one of the last relativley easy trips into a remote area. You wont be disapointed
I passed a few German and Brit travellers on the way out there. They had hired those Wicked Campers Mitsubishi Delica 4wd models. The German couple had left the rear door open and every time they hit a bump some more of their cutlery would fall out LOL.
I picked up what I found and left it in a pile wrapped in their tea towell and hoped they would find it on the way home.
